Upgrade Your Tesla With Ease: FSD Transfer Option Explained For New Purchases

Less than two weeks after CEO Elon Musk promised the transferability of its full-self driving software package as a one-time opportunity, Tesla Inc TSLA has updated its website listing the conditions for the same.

What Happened: Customers who take delivery of their new Tesla starting from July 20 till September 30 may qualify for transferring their FSD capability from their old vehicle to the new one. The old vehicle will cease to have the capabilities and will have access only to standard autopilot features on transfer.

The customer must order their new Tesla vehicle configured with FSD capability. The cost of the capability will be discounted from the final payment. Both the old and the new vehicle must be on the same Tesla account.

Users who want FSD capability on both their old and new Teslas will have to purchase it fresh for their new vehicle, Tesla said on the website. Once removed from the old vehicle, it cannot be reversed either.

Used inventory vehicles, vehicles used for commercial purposes, leased vehicles and vehicles delivered before July 20 are not eligible to claim the offer.

Why It Matters: Tesla will allow FSD transferability in the third quarter, Musk said in the company’s second-quarter earnings call earlier this month. The transferability option will allow existing customers to transfer their FSD to their new Tesla vehicle instead of being locked into an existing car due to the price of FSD.

"This is a one-time amnesty…I hope this makes people happy," Musk said.

Previously, Tesla users held on to their old vehicles instead of upgrading to a new one considering the cost of the FSD package which is valued at up to $15,000.
